Each contact lens material has a unique non-proprietary name. These names follow the rules formulated by the United States Adopted Name (USAN) Council. By having a standardized method of assigning a material name, practitioners, especially ophthalmologists, optometrists, opticians, educators and other eye care specialists, benefit in their daily business conduct.
According to the USAN rules, lens polymers were divided into the filcon (hydrophilic) and the focon (hydrophobic) series, depending on their water content. Materials with water content greater than or equal to 10% by weight at ambient temperature (hydrophilic) are assigned “-filcon” names. The “-focon” stem is assigned to hydrophobic lens materials with water content less than 10%.

Contact lens materials are categorized into five basic groupings according to their water content and ionicity properties. Lenses with less than 50% water content are considered to be “Low Water” while the others are called “High Water.” On the other hand, less reactive surfaces are termed “Nonionic” whereas the more reactive ones are labeled “Ionic.”

Silicone hydrogel (SiHy) lenses are currently included in Group 5 and may be subdivided further in the future.
